DataViz RoadSync Beta for Android

by Jose R. Ortiz on Jun.30, 2009, under News

android road syncOne of the applications that I rely most heavily on when using any S60 device has been DataViz’s RoadSync which provides a great Exchange Server experience that rivals the built in Exchange Support on Windows Mobile. The lack of out-of-the-box Exchange support on Android has been one of the biggest deterrents for me from sticking with an Android device. Even though there are a couple of options out there, like Touchdown, it just does not compare to the DataViz solution. Well DataViz has a beta version of its RoadSync app for Android available for download. It seems like all of the expected RoadSync functionality is there including calendar and contact sync as well as HTML e-mail support for Exchange Server 2007. This is perfect timing as I now have a Google ION, the perfect device to test it on so expect a little review of the performance soon. The beta is free and expires on July 31, 2009. To participate in the beta, simply go to the Android market on your device and search for “DataViz”. Select RoadSync from the results and follow the installation prompts. You must have v.1.5 of the OS for the beta so make sure your phone is up to date. To find out more on the RoadSync beta, follow the link below.

Windows 7 To Offer Special $30 Student Pricing?

by Jose R. Ortiz on Jun.03, 2009, under News, Op. Ed.

win7survey02

The blogs were all buzzing yesterday with Microsoft announcing the October 22 release date for Windows 7. A release date is a great start, but as Kevin points out in his post, we still don’t have any pricing information for the many flavors of Win7. Well, we may now have an indication of some special pricing for students. Yesterday, I happen to have received an e-mail from Microsoft with a link to a survey on Windows 7 RC. The survey had all the usual “What did you think of…” questions, but towards the end, a very interesting question came up. As seen in the screen shot above, the survey asked how likely I would be to purchase Windows 7 at a special student price of $30. The next question followed up by asking how I would feel if the student price was $30. I can only assume that these specific questions came up because I specifically stated that I was a full-time student at the beginning of the survey, but nevertheless, it indicates that MS may be considering a low student pricing scheme. This would not be too far stretched of an idea given that they already offer a “Home & Student” version of Office. Also, given that Macs seem to be so popular among students (through my own observations on campus), this may be an attempt to gain or keep some of that market share. Of course there is no telling if this will actually happen or what version of Windows 7 is offered at the lower rate, but it’s nice to see MS considering something new with their Windows license pricing. Check out the second survey question and survey e-mail after the jump. (continue reading…)

by Jose R. Ortiz on Apr.01, 2009, under News

sony vaio tt 290 ycxJust when we thought that Sony had realized that we were in a recession and killed off their $4,000+ Blu-ray packing TT, they come back with two slightly refreshed options: the TT290NBX and TT290YCX for $2999.99 and $4249.99 respectively. Both will be sporting a 1.6 GHz SU9600, premium carbon fiber finish, 4 GB RAM, and of course a Blu-ray drive. So what do you get for the $4249.99 that you don’t get for $2999.99? Why dual 128 GB SSDs of course and an extra 450 MB of graphics memory. Both are available for pre-order now with an expected shipping date of April 7th. So if you’re one of the lucky ones that has money to burn, head on over to the Sony Style store and put in your order.

Sony Bumps Specs on TT Series

by Jose R. Ortiz on Mar.04, 2009, under News

VAIO TT 290 WhiteSony has always been on the bleeding edge of design but for some reason always seems to fall a bit behind when it comes to specs. When the TT series was launched last year, the entry level model came equipped with a measly 1.2 Ghz Core 2 Duo SU9300 while Lenovo has its U110 running with a nice L7500 running at 1.6 Ghz. Well, it looks like Sony has decided to pump up the power a bit by upping the processor to 1.4 Ghz while the rest of the spces remain the same. Sure, you won’t be breaking any speed records on this but if you’re looking for an 11.1″ laptop you’re probably not too worried about that. Along with the faster processor Sony has introduced a new Apline White color to choose from. The premium $4,000+ model is no longer available but you still have the option of customizing a TT with a Blu-Ray drive if your heart desires. The updated TT’s will run you $2,199 and are available now.
